Environmental Allergies Evaluation and Treatment

Environmental allergies, as distinct from contact allergies, can be summarized as the responses of your body to inhaled, consumed, and injected (via insects) substances. When the natural immune system has been compromised, normally benign "allergens" create reactions that are often immediate, but predictable. A list of these ambient allergen sources includes:

  • Animal dander and fur
  • Dust mites
  • Cockroaches
  • Mold spores
  • Plant pollens from trees, grasses and weeds

Some are present perennially and others appear and dissipate with weather variations. Reactions can range from the annoying, such as sneezing, coughing, itching and runny nose to the life-threatening anaphylactic shock.

Environmental allergies can be caused by a host of factors such as heredity, age, race and gender. The incidence of these allergies appears to be increasing. And, recent discoveries regarding non-genetic factors centering on changes in diet, pollution, and exposure to some diseases in childhood have attracted the attention of researchers.

Food Allergies

Approximately 5-7% of children and 1-2% of adults suffer from food allergies. Most food allergies are caused by only a few foods: milk, soy, wheat, eggs, peanuts, "tree" nuts, fish, and shellfish.

Venom Allergies

Various stinging insects can also cause allergic episodes, ranging from large local reactions to an overt life-threatening reaction (anaphylaxis). The hymenoptera species consisting of yellow jackets, hornets, wasps, and honeybees are of greatest concern.

Treating Your Environmental, Food and Venom Allergies

Since any number of factors can trigger similar reactions, professional evaluation is recommended in order to accurately assess and confirm that an allergic disease is the cause of the symptoms presented.

For all types of allergies, we will evaluate and test where appropriate to help formulate an effective treatment plan. Treatment for most allergies consists of a combination of avoidance, pharmacotherapy (medications) and in some cases, immunotherapy (allergy shots).

During your initial appointment at Westmoreland Allergy and Asthma Associates, Dr. Gorby will analyze potential sources of the reactions and advise whether or not further testing and evaluation is warranted. Often, simply avoiding or minimizing exposure to the offending allergen provides effective relief.

Should further analysis be required, he will utilize reliable testing procedures to eliminate invalid causes and isolate the one(s) contributing to the reactions. Dr. Gorby will then prescribe a treatment plan customized to the individual tolerances of the patient.
